Location
Monemvasia is a small town in the greek prefecture of Lakonia, located 300 km from Athens. The town's name derives from two greek words, Mone and Emvasis (meaning single entrance), as the only way to the famous Rock passes through a bridge, which connects the Old town of the Monemvasia Fortress to the New town, which is also called Bridge.
The Rock, an important landmark of Monemvasia, was created after the subsidence caused in the shores of Laconia due to a strong earthquake . As a result, a small island,1500 m long and 200 m high, was created. The morphology of the Rock enabled the creation of two citadels, the Lower and the Upper Town, also known as the Castle Town, which was not visible from the shore. The crucial geographic position of Monemvasia led to its occupation by numerous conquerors (Franks, Byzantines, Venetians and Turks).
