Kalamos is a mountainous islet lying east of Lefkada and near to the mainland across the village of Mytikas in Aetoloakarnania. Kalamos means reed in Greek and the once remote islet is now provided with modern comforts. It receives an increasing number of tourists every year who seek peace and relaxation and has hotel facilities.
The ancient island of Karnos is now an island that although it is very near to the mainland, it has maintained its beauty untouched. The Venetians who conquered the Ionian Islands have mapped the area and the lovely bay of Porto Leone is named after them. In 1953 because of an earthquake, many of the houses were abandoned and the residents relocated. In the recent years, the inhabitants of the island have fought to keep their paradise alive against development which is most likely to decrease their environment.
