Greek cuisine: From souvlaki to deluxe restaurants
15-09-2012 16:05Greek cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine that differs from place to place as the local products play a major role in recipes. In Athens you can enjoy a great variety of famous Greek dishes in a wide range of surroundings.
Souvlaki might be the first name of food you are going to learn while in Greece and the Greek capital city has plenty of places to taste it. Souvlaki and grill restaurants usually serve nothing but the Greek version of fast food: grilled pork meat wrapped in a pie with onion, tomato and tzatziki, a yogurt-garlic sauce.
The most common place for having lunch or dinner is a tavern. Especially in the district of Plaka there are many taverns offering traditional Greek food in a casual and cosy way usually with tables outside in backyards with small gardens or on paved streets. Some of them are specialized in serving sea food or they have live music.
A special kind of tavern is mezedopolio, serving dishes of meze, the Greek version of tapas, small dishes with titbits usually to share while drinking beer, wine or ouzo. Most of them are located in Monastiraki, behind the metro station, spread across the pedestrian street leading to Thissio, offering a great view to the archaeological site with Stoa Attalou and Ifestos Temple.
For a more formal night out for dinner there are many choices of restaurants in Athens. The traditional Greek recipes can be found a bit altered in a modern way by their chefs while the view competes with the taste. Most of the restaurants offer exquisite dishes with stunning view to the city’s major sightseeing sites like Acropolis or Lycabettus Hill and they have wide variety of Greek wine labels.
For those of you who prefer not to experiment with your food habits there are lots of restaurants serving international cuisine. Italian, Asian, French, Mexican and multi-ethnic restaurants can be found all over Athens, with no absence of the usual American-trend fast food restaurants.
