18-12-2012 15:25In the ancient years, during the rule of Cecrops (who was half person half snake), Athens was thought as the crown jewel of all cities. The Olympians Gods Athena and Poseidon both claimed the city as their own and had fights over it, so one day they decided to participate in a kind of private contest, during which they would both offer a valuable gift to the Athenians and Cecrops would decide which one was the best.
Poseidon lifted his trident and struck the earth with it, offering a spring, of salt-water though.
Athena struck her spear into the ground, stood on her knees and planted an olive tree. This gift would provide the citizens with olives, oil and wood, so it was judged as better.
As the winner, Athena named the city after herself...
