Description of Distomo
Distomo is just 140 km far from Athens and almost next to Delphi and Arahova towns. It is located at an altitude of 450 m and combines rugged mountains with the beautiful northern coast of the Corinthian Gulf. The Monastery of Osios Loukas is 8km east of the village of Distomo and its principal church contains some of Greece’s finest Byzantine frescoes.
History of Distomo
Distomo is believed to be the mythical place where Oedipus met his fate and killed his father after having visited the Oracle in Delphi. Distomo is not known only as a village visited from tourists, but also a known battlefield. One of the most critical battles during the War for Independence took place in Distomo in 1827 with the Greek Captain Karaiskakis succeeding in a victorious attack against the Turks. In recent history, Distomo suffered the great slaughter of the German troops in 1944. The massacre of Distomo has been described as the highest action of barbarism of the Germans in World History.
