The caves at
Pyrgos Dirou are located just
south of Areopolis, they are for years the main destination for tours, the experience is unique, one that both
adults and children will equally enjoy.
Diros Cave is very unusual because its half filled with water so most of
the tour is by boat. First you will walk through a corridor into the rock and then you reach a platform in front of the water.
With all the security measures even though there is no probability for an accident you will enter the boat that carries up to 10 people with the life jacket that you will be given.
The guide will use a paddle to move the boat and he will explain all the features of the cave.
The depth of the water is more than the height of a person at most places, the path that you will take by boat is about 100 m , there are other water paths but the boat can’t reach them.
The water is brackish and very clear, the cave ceiling is full with
stalactites, in some places you can also see the
stalagmites on the bottom of the cave, the cave wasn’t always flood with water.
The
boat trips takes about 20 minutes and then you reach the last portion where you go on walking for about 5 minutes to the exit. You can touch the minerals of the cave and take lovely pictures, the cave is really spectacular. Remember that inside the cave is quite chilly so you may want to take an extra layer with you.
The
museum at the exit of the cave can give you more information with exhibits from the
Neolithic age.
