Athens is a city with many faces and by experiencing only the
daytime version you have seen only a part of it. Athens has
intense nightlife that is a real
must-live experience with a great variety of kinds of entertainment, be it
dance clubs, little cozy bars, theatre, restaurants and the notorious live stages of bouzoukia.
As you have to start your day early to go sightseeing, the totally opposite goes for a night out in Athens.
Start your night late, respectively late if you head for dancing as most of the clubs and bouzoukia stages start almost midnight, but you can warm yourself up with a drink in a bar. Bouzoukia is the name of the stages with live performances of Greek singers. Literally bouzouki is called the musical instrument played in the Greek music resembling like a mandolin. Live performance stages or bouzoukia there are scattered around Athens and depending on the season you may go down town in the winter or south by the coastline in the summer.
Big halls packed with tables and a raised stage for the singers is a typical of a bouzoukia place or skyladika as these places are called in Modern Greek, standing for a doghouse, a definition implying usually the poor quality of the show and the clientele attracted there. The singers are usually dressed in flashy dresses and showered by flowers thrown by the clients. Drinking, smoking and dancing the night out are parts of the having-fun attitude and
the old habit of smashing dishes on the dance floor has been replaced with throwing napkins.
Getting dressed for a night out in bouzoukia does not mean sandals and t-shirts but on the contrary does mean overdressing formally. For a night out in bouzoukia make sure you have made reservations for a table and get ready to spend a lot, as the typical night out ritual involves drinking alcohol and buying a basket of flowers to throw them on the singer of to your companion as a gesture of admiration.

Pireos and Iera Odos streets and in the summer there are by the coastline in
Glyfada.
