The tradition of Myconian textiles... in their modern version.
Textiles of Mykonos have been enjoying a great fame for decades and are considered as with the best quality and originality. A visit to the Folklore Museum of the island, inspired and equipped by Vassilis Kyriazopoulos who managed to collect over 500 textile designs, will prove you the course of the island in the art of weaving. Archaeological findings show that from the very ancient years women of Mykonos had been occupied with weaving, while others speak of the local textiles in the 17th, 18th, 19 century.
Mykonian textiles were absolutely competitive at international level. They would win awards at exhibitions in Paris and were fashionable items back in the 30s. With the tourism development their sales and reputation soared, making them famous around the world.
Today, although women working on the loom are far fewer, and although textiles are not made just for home usage, there is still production and special luxury pieces like shawls, scarves and rugs are made.
In Tak...is store you will have the chance to meet the modern version of woven and pieces made of loom. Three generations later and after the tradition and knowledge have passed from grandma Marina Polychroni to Maria and finally Takis Chalavatzis, impressive crafts are still made!
