Poros is a small picturesque city-harbor in Kefallonia, with various restaurants and bars. It connects the island by boat to Killini, Zante (Zakynthos) and Ithaca.
In 1953 a strong earthquake destroyed all the fishermen's little houses and the settlement was completely rebuilt.
Poros has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. Later, many were the conquerors, according to the history of the island, including Romans, Franks, Venetians, Italians, French, Russians, Turks and British, until 1964 when Kefallonia was united with Greece. In 1821 the settlement acquired the nickname "New Malta", when inhabited by Maltese in an attempt by the English to avoid the devastation of the area. During the recent years, archaeological excavations are carried out in the "Dragon" Cave.
Poros is located approximately 40 km southeast of Argostoli, 28 km southeast of Sami and 12 km northeast of Skala, in the southeast part of the island.
The area is generally renowned as a fishing place, and many visit it so as to observe the seal Monachus-Monachus and the Caretta-Caretta turtle that ocassionaly make their appearance in sea caves. The canyon area is also worth visiting.
Apart from the port, one can find various taverns and bars along the award-winning Blue Flag beach, Aragia, where you can enjoy both the sea and traditional delicious food.
