The village of Peratata belongs to the municipal unit of Livathou and is located in the southern part of the island of Kefalonia. It lays at the foot of a hill, on top of which there is St George Fortress.
The fort of St George on the hill, at the north part of Peratata village, was constructed back in 12th century, but the current structure was built by the Venetians in the 16th century. Peratata used to be the capital of the island until 1757. The fortress covers an area of 16.000 square meters (170.000 square feet), and the perimeter of the walls is 600 m. The great earthquake of 1953 cuased considerable damage in the region.
