Panathenaic Stadium
13-02-2013 17:02Between the two hills Agra and Ardettos there was a hollow part on the ground, where in 330 BC, Lykourgos constructed a stadium for the athletic competitions of the Panathenaic festival.
Herodes Atticus restored it in 140 AD into the form that was found at the 1870 excavation, the horseshoe construction.
During Roman times the stadium was used as an arena, the modern times restoration was conducted by the end of the 19th century for the first Olympic Games in 1896.
The stadium was restored again in 2003 and the square in front of it was all renewed in preparation for the Athens Olympic Games 2004.
On 4th Aprin 1968, AEK Athens won the European Cup beating Slavia Prague, in front of 60.000 spectators and this is a unique World Record as it is the largest crowd ever attended a basketball game.
Panathinaic Stadium means the stadium of all Athenians, it’s also called Kallimarmaro which means ‘made of fine marble’.
It is definitely something you should see in a visit in Athens.
