The region of Evros, whose name is derived from the river Evros, is the northernmost region of Greece, sharing borders with Turkey and Bulgaria. Its strategic geopolitical position along with the recent construction of the highway of Egnatia Odos, have added to the local development in trading and commerce. The rare natural beauty attracts many visitors who wish to stay in hotels close to the major towns and visit unvisited villages to the north or even visit Turkish and Bulgarian towns close to the borders.
The first reports for the ancient tribes of this part of Thrace are mentioned by Homer in both epics. Kikones were skilled horsemen and the first ones to cultivate vineyards. In Byzantine times the area plays an important role, because it adjoins the capital of the Empire, Istanbul. Many Byzantine monuments indicate the acne of the region this period: Didymoteichon Castle and 23 towers of (8th - 15th c.), the fortress of John Katakouzinos in Pythio (early 14th century.), the temple of Kosmosotira in Feres. It is worth mentioning that the Byzantine monuments of Evros is a valuable source of acquaintance with the art of Constantinople, and unique testimony of a great artistic activity which has left few traces at its birthplace due to subsequent disasters. The region of Evros became part of Greece in 1920, when it was ceded by Bulgaria as a result of the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine. During the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), many Greek refugees settled in the Evros, and new towns were built, including Orestiada. The Evros river valley was flooded several times, notably in 1997, 2005, and 2006.Evros is one of the largest regions in Greece with high political significance. It is situated in the northernmost part of Greece with Evros River being the natural border with Turkey to the east and Bulgaria to the north. The region spans an area of 4.242 sq. km. and a total population of 150.580 inhabitants. The capital city of the region is the port city of Alexandroupolis, being the main ferry gate to the Aegean Islands and the Island of Samothraki. The Rhodope mountain range lies in the west and the southwest of the region, while it faces the Aegean Sea to the south.The Evros Delta is one of Europe’s most important wetlands, a heaven comprised of coastal lakes, lagoons, interior rivers, sand dunes, swamps and reed beds, shelter to 330 varieties of birds, including several endangered species. The village of Roussa is known for the site of megalithic Thracian tombs dating from the 9th century BC and decorated with mysterious rock carvings. The Dadia Forest is a birdwatcher’s heaven as it is home to 36 of the 38 known species of European raptors, some of them quite rare.
