Meganisi has always lived under the shadow of the island of Lefkada. It has been inhabited since Neolithic Era and it is mention as Taphos by the ancient writers. Taphians were well known traders and it is considered that probably they have colonised the Italian Island of Capri. During the Greek War of Independence of 1821, the Meganissian Demos Tselios played an important role and the island hosted many of the great leaders.
Meganissi spans an area of 22 sq. km. with a total population of 1.092 residents. Meganisi Island is the largest island of a complex comprising of Skorpios, Skorpidi, Thilia, Kithros. The islands closer to Meganissi are Lefkada on the west and Kefalonia on the south.
Despite its small size, Meganisi has plenty of beaches and its beautiful bays attract many yachts. Aghios Ioannis, Spillia, Pasoumaki, Ambelakia, Atherinos, Faros, Limonari, Elia, Loutrolimni and Bereta are the most popular beaches of the island. The islet of Madouri and Skorpios owned by the famous Onassis family are also interesting sights.
