Description of Lipsi
Lipsi is the largest
island of a cluster of islets in the Aegean Sea. It is an ideal destination for relaxing, and serene holidays as it is remote and not very popular as a destination. However, there are
hotels where you can stay and tourist facilities in general. The people are friendly and there are many
taverns to try the local cuisine.

Lipsi spans an area of 17,35 sq. km. with a total population of 698 residents. The islands closer to
Lipsi are
Patmos on the west and
Leros on the south.
History of Lipsi
The history of
Lipsi is strongly connected with that of the neighboring islands and especially
Patmos. It seems to has been inhabited since prehistoric times with many findings dating back to classical times as the ruins of an ancient citadel on the top of the hill indicating the existence of a small town. The history of the island during Byzantine period seems to be lost. In the 11th centurythe island has been given over to the neighboring island of
Patmos to St. Cristodoulos who builds the monastery of St. John the Theologian and Evangelist and the city.
Sightseeing on Lipsi
Lipsi Island is blessed with natural beauty and friendly people. The islets scattered around offer many choices of day-trip excursions by boat for the ultimate experience of tranquillity. Because of the untouched environment there are many birds that live here and the place is ideal for bird watching. The most popular beaches of Lipsi are: Lientou, Kampos, Platys Yialos, Papandria, Chochlakoura with pebbles, Tourkomnima, Xirokampos, Monodendri and Kamares. Among the sights of the island is the church of Panagia tou Harou, Our Lady of Death as the Greek name means. It is worth visiting because it is the only icon depicting Virgin Lady holding Jesus on the cross and is considered to be miraculous.
Local Products of Lipsi
The local thyme honey produced the traditional way, dairy products as touloumotyri cheese and grapes.

By ferry boats departing from either Patmos or Leros Islands.
