Greek... frappe, a whole philosophy!
02-04-2014 13:14Famous and even notorious Greeks for their coffee love and addiction have shaped a whole philosophy around coffee and the ritual of this pleasure consumed in coffee places in the city.
When Greeks decide to go for a coffee, do not grab just another cup of coffee. Going out for a coffee actually is a ritual that implies socializing, spending some hours sipping on your coffee and chatting with friends in a nice environment.
Coffee places in the old traditional way, kafenia as they are called in Greek, usually attract the elderly who spend their time sipping on a small cup of Greek coffee, while playing the backgammon, reading the newspaper and talking over politics. Whereas, the modern coffee places attract any kind of clients and they serve a wide variety of coffee with frappe being the first one on the list.
Frappe is a type of coffee invented by chance in the 60’s in Thessaloniki by Dimitris Vakondios, an employee in Nestle Company who was trying to make his usual instant coffee but he could not find hot water and ended up putting instant coffee and cold water in a shaker. The result of this accident was the recipe for the new National Coffee for Greeks, Frappe.
Frappe is served cold in a long glass, with ice cubes and a straw and is the ideal beverage for hot days in the summer. The only rival of Frappe coffee is Freddo, the cold version of a cappuccino coffee which tends to be the second best choice for a cold beverage of caffeine during summer.
Frappe for Greeks is maybe like an identity of a modern culture containing a paradox, as their whole existence consists on unanimous facts: It takes some seconds to be made; it needs some hours to get consumed.
