Glyfada... do anything, just by the sea
19-09-2012 16:05Glyfada is a suburb of Athens facing Athens Riviera, 15 km southwest of the city centre. It is an excellent choice for those who wish to visit Athens but staying in a hotel by the seaside or vice versa.
Recently founded as a suburb, Glyfada has been called names such as “Beverly Hills of Greece” or “Greek Hamptons” and not without a reason as it is known for the luxury hotels across the coastline, fancy restaurants, in-fashion shopping districts, great nightclubs and yachts marina.
In the early 1930’s was the starting point of foundation of this suburb as a summer resort especially due to the spotless clear beaches but the real boost was given by the foundation of the first Athens Airport in nearby Elliniko area and the American Base located there in the 90’s.
Glyfada marina is another reason for the development of this suburb as it is always busy attracting visitors all year round. The marina can accommodate up to 810 vessels providing all the services for docking.
The shopping district of Glyfada is very popular with shops of brands and famous designers located close to the action of the busy cafes and restaurants. Next to the busy bars, there is also the Glyfada Golf Club, an 18-holes course which hosts golf events.
The sandy beaches attract numerous Athenians and tourists for a fresh break-out in the summer and they are easily accessed by the tram and buses at the stops Batis and Edem. There are beaches like Asteria, where you may have to pay for an entrance fee where you can enjoy water-fun activities and getting a sunbed and umbrella. The long coastline offers also beaches with no fee, so feel free to choose. The fun on beach does not stop after sunset, as the night life of Athens goes south in summer. The coastline of Glyfada has some of the greatest open-air night clubs with loud music and dancing with sea view till the early morning hours.
Experience the uplifting atmosphere of Athens Riviera and choose among a great number of recreational activities the one that suits your mood.
