Ano Mera settlement offers a different aspect of Mykonos beauty as is located nearly in the centre of the island on a plateau on a hill 8,5 km far from Hora, Mykonos capital town and port. In tourist terms, Ano Mera is getting little by little on the tourist attractions map as it offers a more quiet and family version of Mykonos for those travellers who want to live an alternative visit of famous Mykonos. The reformation of Ano Mera central square has totally transformed the village that is full of traditional taverns and restaurants for you to enjoy local delicacies.
The settlement of Ano Mera expands around the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani and is known to have been established by Cretans who used to live in Folegandros Island and moved here in 16th century. Ano Mera is the second big settlement of Mykonos and is usually where the permanent residents of the island live. The residents here deal with stock breeding and you can find family run businesses making the local Kopanisti cheese.
