Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lasithi region, named by the Byzantine church located in the bay of Agios Nikolaos. Agios Nicholas is a very cosmopolitan city and a lively tourist destination. It has hotels for accommodation, restaurants and taverns.
In the early 60’s Agios Nikolaos became the hideaway for Jules Dassin and Walt Disney but soon it became a package destination and an overdeveloped tourist resort. Agios Nikolaos was inhabited since the late Bronze Age by Dorians.
Agios Nikolaos is the capital of Lasithi region in eastern Crete, east of Heraklion, north of the town of Ierapetra and west of the town of Sitia. Agios Nikolaos an area of 317 sq. km. with a total population of 19.000 inhabitants.
Lake Voulismeni is located at the centre of the town, connected to the harbour of the town by a channel. It used to be a sweetwater lake that was later connected to the sea. Spinalonga Island lies in the Gulf of Mirabello and its strong fortifications withstood the Turkish sieges for longer than any other Cretan stronghold surrendering almost 30 years after the rest of Crete. Later on Spinalonga Island became a leper colony until 1953 and the island has been uninhabited ever since. It became famous because of the best seller “The Island” written by Victoria Hislop.
